John Harvey Wheelock, age 86, went to be with his Lord, Friday, June 2, 2017.  Born on October 15, 1930 in La Grange, MO, John was educated in Quincy, IL.  He joined the U.S. Army, served in the Korean conflict and rose to the rank of Sergeant. He was past Commander and a lifetime member of VFW Post 702, as well as, a lifetime member of the Neal E. Fonger American Legion Post 179.  John also volunteered at the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans. He retired from ALTL Trucking in 1992; was active in Ottawa County Mounted Division; is a member of the Hudsonville Congregational United Church of Christ and enjoyed family, friends, horseback riding, camping, and traveling in the motorhome. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.

John was preceded in death by his son Jeffrey Wheelock; granddaughter Kristina Dalstra; parents John and Helen Wheelock; brother Robert (Myrna) Wheelock; father-and mother-in-law Pete and Leona Watson and brother-in-law Dr. Larry Watson.   

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Delores (Watson) Wheelock: daughters Linda Wheelock, Deb Dalstra, and Kim Smigiel; five grandchildren Chad (Meg) Dalstra, Dan (Karen) Dalstra, Stephanie Tagg, Jake Smigiel and Jessica Smigiel; eight great grandchildren Kamerin, Kaitlin and Koda Tagg, Lyssa and Lily Dalstra, and Lauren, Erin and Andrew Dalstra; sister-in-law Sylvia (Ralph) Baxter; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held from 3:30PM – 5:30PM and 7PM – 9PM Monday, June 5, 2017 at Cook Funeral Home (East Building – Memorial Chapel), 4235 Prairie St. SW, Grandville, MI.  Funeral service will be held at 11AM with visitation at 10AM on Tuesday, June 6, 2017 at Hudsonville Congregational United Church of Christ – 4950 32nd Ave, Hudsonville, MI 49426.  Pastor Dan Furman will be officiating.  Interment will be at Floral View Memorial Gardens.
