BOOMSMA

Joel S. Boomsma, age 57, went to be with his Lord, Friday, September 15, 2017.  Joel was a big guy, with a big smile, and great big hugs, all of which will be deeply missed.

He was preceded in death by his son, Benjamin Boomsma; his father, Menzo Boomsma; and his sister, Dawn Hankinson.

Joel will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 5 years, Dawn Boomsma (Deemter); his children, Nathan Boomsma, Brooke Boomsma, Alex Boomsma, David Boomsma; Dawn’s children, Gunnar Meyering, Mackenzie (Brierly) Kuhudzayi, Holden Meyering; his mother, Marie Boomsma; his father- and mother-in-law Bob and Marge Deemter; his siblings Denise (Dennis) DeVries, Jim (Tami) Boomsma; his brother- and sister-in-law, Donn (Shelley) Deemter; and his nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Joel worked for Steelcase for 22 years, and the last 15 years he worked at CareLinc as an office manager.  He was the first to offer help when someone needed it, sometimes formally, through volunteering at Buist Community Ministries, or serving as an Elder at Peace Church, but more often as a friend or neighbor helping with whatever job needed to be done.  Joel was a self-proclaimed wood hoarder, cutting wood for heating his home and bonfires with friends.  He coined ridiculous phrases and names for people.  Joel was a music connoisseur and put that gift to work as a wedding DJ.  He loved camping, traveling with Dawn, and bird hunting.  Football, fast pitch softball and South Christian High School Sports were favorite pastimes and topics for discussion.

Visitation will be held Monday, September, 18, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 PM and Tuesday, September 19, from 2 to 4 PM, at Peace Church in Middleville, 6950 Cherry Valley Road.  Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, September 19, at 6 PM at Peace Church.  Rev. Adam Barr will officiate.

In honor of Joel, contributions may be made to South Christian High School – Building Fund.  The family welcomes memories and messages in their guestbook online at www.cookcares.com.
