LINDHOUT -  Gordon A. Lindhout, O.D., age 91, of Grandville, went to his eternal Father on Tuesday, October 24, 2017.

Gordon was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, on April 3, 1926, to Nell and Tony Lindhout.  He attended Hall Street School, and graduated from South High School in 1943 where he earned letters in track and football.  He attended Grand Rapids Junior College until he turned 18, and then was drafted into the Navy.  Following boot camp, he attended Purdue University in their Electronic Engineering School.  From there he was sent to the Philippines and China.  When the war ended, Gordon went back to Junior College and got his A.S. and then enrolled in Northern Illinois College of Optometry.

After graduation, he came back to Michigan and opened an optometry office in Grandville in 1950, above what is now Johnson’s Carpet.  From there he and his lawyer friend, Robert Shaw, built a post office building on Chicago Drive with their offices above it.  Gordon became partners with Dr. James Burton and eventually built an office on Wilson Ave with a group of other dentists.  Later, Gordon sold his practice to Dr. Scott Miller, and retired from the practice of optometry in 2002.  He then had more time to enjoy his hobbies of reading, hunting, fishing, traveling and golfing with friends and family.

Gordon married Evelyn Verhey in 1948 while attending optometry college.  Gordon was a 65-year member of the Grandville Rotary and a Life Member of the West Michigan Optometric Association and the Michigan Optometric Association.  Gordon belonged to the Arabian Horse Association and traveled with Evelyn to many places with the Elderhostel Association.  He was a member of Grandville First Reformed Church.

Gordon was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and their wives, Donald (Jane) and Russell (Ruth).  Gordon is survived by his wife of 69 years, Evelyn, daughter and son-in-law Gayle and Ray Schmelzel, son William Lindhout, sister-in-law Millie Cudney and her family, a step-granddaughter Diane Rand and her family, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, November 10, 2017 at First Reformed Church of Grandville, 3060 Wilson Ave., S.W., Grandville with Pastor Bud Pratt officiating.  Visitation with family will be from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service.
